The influence of members’ attachment style on group cohesion in substance use therapy groups

Abstract Group cohesion is an important factor in group therapy as it influences treatment outcomes and processes. One’s attachment style has been found to impact experiences of cohesion, however research into this relationship substance use disorder (SUD) lacking. This particular concern insecure presentations are more prevalent clinical population often choice. The current study sought determine whether significantly predicted cohesion. It also provided a qualitative exploration factors that promote SUD treatment. Participants ( N = 38) attending program completed self-report measures. Attachment avoidance was significant negative predictor positive bonding working, relationships. anxiety relationships, however, unexpectedly did not predict or working. findings highlight the importance therapists tailoring meet needs individuals environment conducive recovery.
